POSITION PURPOSEPerforms phlebotomy, specimen receipt, processing, specimen distribution, computer order entry and/or requisition completion, and other pre-analytical tasks as required.
Tracks specimens through appropriate computer functions when available, to ensure that all specimens are routed accurately and in a timely manner.
Assures complete and accurate patient samples, patient demographics, and diagnosis codes are provided, and submits to the laboratory for testing.
ResponsibilitiesPhlebotomy Performs successful sample collection to include venipuncture blood draw, capillary puncture, infant heel sticks, and urine collection utilizing proper patient identification and customer service skills.
Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients and physician offices.
Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies and procedures.
Uses good judgment to decide when to contact a Phlebotomy Lead, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Manager, or a Pathologist, as necessary.
Knowledge of policies, procedures, and other reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals.
Able to access on-line websites for assistance, when needed.
May utilize a glucometer or perform waived urine testing prior to administration of glucola.
Understands laboratory requisitions and how to locate missing or incomplete information.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
Receives and enters orders in Hospital (HIS) or Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Distributes specimen to appropriate testing area.
Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.
Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifugation of vacutainer and aliquoting/pouring over of specimens.
Aliquots and adjusts pH of 24-hour urine specimens as required by location.
Follows test cancellation policy and completes follow-up tasks as needed.
Locates specimens for add-on testing.
Maintains minimum supply levels and maintains cleanliness of workstation and of the section.
Provides input on policies and procedures.
Assists in training new employees and students.
Reviews and completes assigned continuing education documents.
This includes annual mandatory education and laboratory procedures review and acknowledgment.
Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures) as required by location.
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships.
Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.
Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to Trinity Health.
Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
Adheres to all hospital HIPAA and privacy policies.
